US Treasury To Remove "In God We Trust" from Currency, Replace with "In Blank We Trust"by christopher taylorWASHINGTON, DC--The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced its intention to "comply with the First Amendment" by removing the word "God" from American currency. "We feel that with the Supreme Court appearing to head toward Justice O'Connor's symbolic endorsement test, it would be prudent of us to stop antagonizing the substantial number of Americans whose religious affiliation does not include 'trust' in 'God,' " Acting Deputy Secretary Arnold I. Havens said. "But rather than seem as if the Treasury is hostile toward religion generally--clearly a problem under the Establishment Clause--we thought we'd be better off replacing 'God' with 'Blank.' That way people can fill in the message on the money with whatever they deem appropriate, whether it be 'God,' 'Bodhisattva Manjusri,' 'secular humanism,' 'the curative power of government intervention,' or even 'nothing.' " The Treasury has been receiving largely positive feedback from both the religious and secular political communities. "This is a great compromise," stumped an anonymous political figure, who may or may not be of a monotheistic faith. "It really hammers home the American tradition of trust, while at the same time emphasizing our diverse backgrounds." |
